While anyone with a Alberta.com account can initially set up an online group, only qualifying community groups from Alberta, Canada will be allowed to maintain either a listed or unlisted group on Alberta.com. The Community Editor decides, in accordance with Alberta.com's policies and standards, which non-profit groups and grassroots groups qualify.
Non-profit Organization: According to the The Canadian Centre for Philanthropy, "A nonprofit is an organization whose purpose is to serve a public good rather than make a profit; net earnings are not distributed to the owners or shareholders (as in a private corporation) or to the members, but are retained for the purpose for which the organization was established."
Non-profit Sector: "The sector would include hospitals, universities, religious organizations, cooperatives, charities, voluntary organizations, economic and trade associations, among many others" (The Canadian Centre for Philanthropy). In addition to traditional charity groups as defined by the Centre, trade organizations and associations; registered religious organizations; and non-partisan local government initiatives (municipalities; provincial government initiatives; and constituency offices) would also, for example, qualify for use of Community under our guidelines.
Grassroots Group: Any group, whether officially incorporated as a non-profit organization or not, that is made up of people sharing a common vision, cause, or initiative; dedicated to the betterment of their local neighbourhood, region, province, or country; and/or committed, in principle, to the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy's definition of a non-profit organization.
