Community Leader Resource

3. Public groups vs. private groups

Privacy and control or publicity and freedom

Each group leader (Community Leader) controls how the group uses its site. It's up to you.

As soon as you have set up a group (if you are the Community Leader), you can invite members to join and begin using the site, even if it's not yet listed. In addition, if you are planning to list the site, it must be approved by the Community Editor before it will appear in the Community directory; your community's site must meet a minimum content requirement and not violate any of our Standards of Content and Conduct before it gets listed. But, don't worry, the criteria for listing should be very easy for you to meet. We're not here to censor you, but to ensure that the Community space is the best it can be for all Albertans and Alberta users. For more about setting up a group, see Creating a Community group and performing group leader tasks.

For group privacy and control:
For maximum privacy, a group can be unlisted, in which case, only invited members can access the site. An unlisted site is not included in any category list within Community and it cannot be found by searching. The Community Leader and the community's members, however, could still distribute and promote the site's URL if they chose to do so. In addition, the Community Editor can access and review all sites, listed or unlisted, at any time.

A listed group is included in Community's directory in its appropriate category and can be found by searching. However, the Community Leader of a listed group can also restrict group membership and require that he or she approve members first. The leader can also restrict access to individual pages, allowing only members to see the message board, group calendar, chat room, newsletter, links, member list, and/or the group settings.

A leader of a listed group can allow members and guests to participate in all activities or restrict individual activities to the leader only or to members only. Activities include inviting people to join the group, creating topics in the message board, creating events for the calendar, adding links, sending email to the group, and deleting posts and events.

An additional privacy feature is the ability to specify that your group's site contains Adult material, not suitable for persons under 18. Before your group's Home page is displayed, Community displays a screen that advises that the material may not be suitable for people under 18.

For maximum group publicity and freedom:
If your group wants maximum publicity and freedom, the group leader can set the group up as listed and allow members and guests to perform all activities and view all parts of the site. A guest is a person who is not a member of the group or who has not signed in to the site.
