2. Defining key terms

Several terms recur throughout Alberta's Community Self-Publishing space. It is worthwhile to formally define them.

Member: Anyone who joins a group by browsing the Community directory and then clicking the Join link. Or a member may reply to an emailed invitation to join. Groups may require that membership be approved. Groups can be set up to allow anyone to become a member or only invited guests. A community's members list may remain private or can be made public (accessible to all Alberta users).

Guest: A person who is not a member of the group or who has not signed in to the Alberta Community space and is merely browsing the information available in Community.

Community End User: Any individual who participates, uses, views, or accesses a section of Alberta's Community space. A Community End User may be a member or a guest.

Community Leader / Group Leader: The individual responsible for (a) creating a group, (b) ensuring that a group's content remains timely and relevant, (c) allowing new members to join, and (d) mediating the communication flow within the group's Community site. The Community Leader also communicates with the Community Editor and acts as a liaison between the Community Editor and the group's members.

Community Editor: The staff person at Alberta.com responsible for the editorial integrity of Alberta's Community. The Community Editor approves new groups, lists unlisted groups, communicates with the Community Leader, and is the point of contact at Alberta.com for participating community groups (community@Alberta.com). The Community Editor also ensures that all Alberta Community Terms of Service, Privacy Policies, and Standards are being met.

Community Group / Community Client / Non-Profit Group / "community" (small "c") / "groups" or "the group": Participating and qualifying non-profit or grassroots organizations (those community groups that are listed or unlisted on the Alberta.com Community section); groups currently unlisted and ready to be listed in the Community section; or potential groups that qualify to be listed and use Alberta Community's features but that are currently not participating.
